ChimLit01Read the June 2023 Port Townsend Leader news about this wonderful project…

AAUW Port Townsend (and the University Women’s Foundation of Jefferson County) partners with Chimacum Creek Primary School to support the kindergarten literacy program. The goal of the program is to help kindergartners learn to read by participating in small group instruction.  Four days a week volunteers work one hour with groups of four to five children using teacher-provided lessons and materials that support the literacy objectives addressed in the classroom.

ChimLit02By working with these children for an hour once a week, our volunteers can make a difference in the life of a child. Tutoring sessions are held Monday through Thursday morning.  This program is simple, fun, and effective.  The program is designed for volunteers who do not have a teaching background. All materials are provided and training is held in the fall.  Additional training is scheduled throughout the year as needed.   You do not have to be a member of AAUW to join this effective program-all members of the community are welcome.  Substitute tutors are also needed.

The Literacy Program is simple, fun, rewarding–and it works!
