Tax Advantage Donations From Your Retirement Account
Did you know that you can make a donation to a charitable organization and benefit your own finances as well as the charity? In most cases, a contribution in the form of a “distribution” from a retirement account, such as an IRA, sent directly to a charitable organization can qualify as a nontaxable withdrawal. Contributions that are non-taxable make it easy for individuals to make donations to their favorite, community charities. This is really a win-win financial outcome for both the contributing individual, as well as the charitable organization! FYI: UWF non-profit tax status info – click here…
Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) are back – permanently. With the enactment of the PATH Act of 2015 , Congress again brought QCDs back to life. QCDs allow IRA owners and beneficiaries who are age 70 ½ and older to directly transfer $100,000 to a charity tax-free. What is different this time around? QCDs are now permanently available. This ends years of last-minute renewals. If you are over age 70½ and charitably inclined, you can count on QCDs being available. You can act now to integrate this strategy into your long-term planning earlier in the year.
If you have a required minimum distribution, (RMD) remaining for 2017 on your retirement account, a request can be made for a portion of the remainder be sent as a distribution (donation) to the UWF. The distribution would be non-taxable. Additionally, a distribution would reduce the taxable remainder amount in your retirement account. This is truly a win-win way to make a contribution that is advantageous to both you and the UWF. After a charitable donation is made, the organization sends an acknowledgement form for your tax records indicating the withdrawal is tax exempt.
